Raising Business Consciousness
An Eastern allegory compares Man to a house full of servants whose master and head steward are absent. As the servants forget their roles and do what they like, with no co-ordination, the house ends up in complete chaos. The only possibility for things to improve is for a number of servants to agree to appoint a deputy steward. The elected steward can then command the other servants to do the right work in the right place. There is then every possibility of the head steward returning to replace the deputy and to prepare the house for the master’s return. The master can be likened to your true self, which can only appear when the level of consciousness of knowing who you are has been attained. As the unified true self once more takes command from your disunited conditioned self, you no longer feel the need to compartmentalise everything to fit previous preconceptions.
This is a level of consciousness that does not seek justification for any of your actions. Being in a unified state of mind allows you to follow the counsel of your own heart and live the life you’re intended to live by making your own decisions, rather than passively submitting to what others think is best for you. This will involve putting yourself first, which of course runs contrary to what we have been taught.
The truth is that to be sincere with others we must first develop sincerity in ourselves. There can be no other choice, in the area of personal development, than to put ourselves first. This does not mean running roughshod over others; it involves consciously accepting that only you have the power to make yourself either happy or unhappy. In making yourself happy you are able to create happiness for others because your increased self-esteem does not need to justify itself. Only when you have made sense of yourself can you then make sense of the surrounding world.
Becoming conscious of our habitual tendency to be judgmental towards others, or to seek justification for our own actions, allows us to tune into our true conscience. This allows us to have a bird’s eye view of all our different compartments and reveals to us how we really feel about something.
Becoming conscious of those times when we feel we have to justify ourselves provides us with the opportunity to dissolve a false and instead listen to the guiding voice of a surer, developed conscience.
The Winning Corner
At one time e or another, everyone feels that they have been a rat. Whenever we have behaved badly, particularly in relationships, we put it down, in all honesty, to our acting out of character. `I can’t believe I said that!’ we exclaim, or Was that person really me?’, or ‘I just wasn’t myself.’ Our conscience therefore seems to work best whenever we are being observed by another. How much better it would be if we could begin to observe ourselves as another might.
Harnessing our true conscience through: fully understanding our motives, before making a move; being honest with ourselves as to what is really important to us so that we are not prepared to compromise, regardless of persuasion; not feeling that we have to justify our actions; because we have the confidence that they have been initiated by a more unified self, provides the power that will unerringly guide us towards balanced growth and development. Our ultimate ate goal is for peace of mind. Everything that is meant for us and our highest good, be it a job, promotion, a relationship, or a sum of money, and every action that leads us to what is right for us, will come from listening to our true conscience. Whatever discomfort we experience will derive from behaviour based on false fears.
Whenever circumstances demand a compromise from you, take the opportunity to re-examine your motives to resolve any fears you may have. If you feel you are having to compromise your true conscience, accept it as an indication that you need to alter your circumstances, perhaps leave a relationship. Beware of looking for the angle in everything, as in doing so you place yourself in uncomfortably tight corners, and drain yourself of energy in fighting to get out. But remember that while one of the most painful wounds in the world is a stab of conscience, it is good that you always win, because it may otherwise disfigure the soul.
