Pressure at Work? Promoted by Positive thinking
For convenience, imagine yourself starting your workday, then being at work, and finally leaving work at the end of the day. Read my suggestions and see if some of the points might apply to help you to become a more positive person, prior to, during and after work.
Before work:
- On waking each workday, think about the most interesting and exciting part of the forthcoming day. Do not accept the response, `Nothing!’.
- Before getting out of bed, say something to yourself like, ‘I will make the most of my abilities today!’.
- When dressing, consider wearing clothing which is different—something which may evoke positive remarks and compliments from workmates. A positive remark can put some brightness into a grey day.
- Plan a positive experience each day and then look forward to it.
- Eat a healthy and hearty breakfast so that you have the energy to make the most of the day.
- If you drive to work, repeat a positive saying at each red traffic light. For example, ‘I can complete the James report today!’, assuming that this is a realistic and achievable task.
- When you arrive at work, pause briefly before entering your workplace, take a comfortably deep breath, relax as you breathe out and then enter with a relaxed and positive bearing.
At work:
On entering your workplace, greet your workmates with a pleasant ‘Hello’ or ‘Nice day’ (or, ‘Rotten day out there, isn’t it?’).
- Take a few minutes to have a brief chat with particular workmates, as the occasion warrants.
- When you get to your workspace, get settled straight away and write out your daily plan.
- Make certain that you get right to your high priority tasks.
- Look forward to the pleasant event(s) which you have scheduled during the day.
- Reward yourself for having completed your first significant task of the day by telling a close workmate about the accomplishment.
- Participate actively in meetings.
- Use your coffee breaks and lunch break to meet with workmates whose company you enjoy.
- If time allows, try to get out of your workplace for a brisk and vigorous walk after lunch.
- Survey the availability of pleasant places nearby where you can take your lunch and get some exercise as well.
- Keep updating your daily plan as you complete tasks or as new tasks occur during the day.
- Tell a close workmate how the day is going for you.
- When meeting with your boss or supervisor, be certain to provide a relevant and brief commentary about your progress on any special projects.
- Consider expanding your circle of friends at work. Invite a newcomer at work to join your group at the coffee break or at lunch.
- At the end of the day, review your daily plan, taking special note of the crossed off jobs. Take pride in your accomplishments. If there are outstanding tasks, place them on the plan for tomorrow.
- Clear your workspace so that you can get right down to work when you arrive tommorrow.
After work:
- Occasionally, join your workmates after work for a drink or chat so as to keep in touch socially as well as vocationally.
- As a special treat, buy some flowers or another small gift on your way home. You, your spouse or housemate(s) can enjoy the celebration of Wednesday or any other day, just because it is that particular day.
- Discuss the high points and the low points of your day with your spouse or housemates. Ask their opinion about any specific problems you might be having at work and be certain to reciprocate.
- During the after work hours, try to go out and get some vigorous exercise to blow off any accumulated tensions from the day. Just a brisk thirty minute walk will do wonders for you.
- Make ample provision for time with your family and close friends during evenings and weekends. These important support people can play a most significant part in maintaining a positive and productive outlook in your work life.
- Get to bed in time to have a full night’s rest. Insufficient sleep can be a problem for very busy people and irritability and crankiness can result.
Thus, you can make your work life and your personal life much more positive by starting your days with a positive outlook and reinforcing this approach during and after work. Taking time to think positively about yourself and those close to you will help you overcome many obstacles. Some obstacles, however, may cause you to step back.
