Choosing a Business, what Do You Want to Do?

You may think you already know what kind of business you want to run, what you plan to name it, and how much business you will be able to rake in during the course of your first year. Congratulations! You fall into a very small category of people who have their businesses planned down to the smallest detail, complete with a raft of contingency plans.

You’re also in the minority. Many people first think of the type of business they’d like to run, and then spend months ironing out the details. And even when you think you have everything nailed down, once you open your doors for business, a whole new layer of details you hadn’t anticipated will be there to greet you with open arms.

Regardless of which category you belong to, start by asking yourself the following questions:

    * What do you really enjoy doing?

    * If you could do anything, what would you like to do?

    * If you’re currently mulling over a particular idea for a business, is it really something you would look forward to doing on a daily basis, twelve or more hours a day?

    * Have you picked this idea because it offers a popular product or service, and you think you’ll be able to make more money with this business than with something you’d be happier doing? If you love working with people, then starting a service-oriented business where you have to deal with people all day makes sense. Starting a business where you have to be holed up in an office all day with no one around doesn’t.
