Empress Ni allowed her natural charitable emotions to be swept aside because of emotions belonging to, and residing in, the past. In losing her present compassion in favour of past grievances, she relinquished her power over her present and future actions. By accepting the past in favour of the present, she reacted in a manner that was supposedly alien to her natural character.
Often a parent is horrified to hear themselves criticising their offspring using the same admonitions they experienced so humiliatingly as a child. Many a rising executive gaining a higher position may employ criticism previously applied to his own efforts during his time as a subordinate. Both have accepted past experiences over the present. Both may unconsciously prompted, through their conditioned thinking, by the misconception that the best support is through what is termed ‘constructive criticism’. Experiencing the present moment, however, involves growing from the past, not imitating it. Feeling nervous, cynical or hard done by, for example, is caused by permitting past experiences to impose themselves upon the present moment. Yet the claim of the past upon the present is invalid. When our life is supremely concentrated in the present, there is no need to worry about what has been, or be fearful about what may be. For the right response will come to us for every situation as it occurs. That is our real freedom; the ability to enjoy the choices we make in every successive moment of the present.
Very few people are able to live in the present moment of their lives. Whether in relationships or business, they allow their lives to be directed by past or future influences. Most choices are made under the rational mind that prompts, ‘bearing in mind the circumstances, this is the most appropriate decision.’ By letting go of all influences we are able to feel intuitively which direction we want to take, regardless of the circumstances.
With the focus of attention on results, the influence over process becomes weak. Systems break down and energy is then directed towards damage limitation through defence and blame. Read the rest of this entry »
